Bioinformatics Database Integration and Analysis of Gene Functional Association

Researcher: Mr Yang Ding
Project Supervisor: Dr Yonghong Peng, Prof Desmond Tobin

This project investigates the feasibility of integrating the GeneBank database, Gene Ontology and KEGG pathway database to enhance the gene co-expression network (extracted from gene expression database), and for the hope of enhancing the identification of gene functional associations.

BioNetwork: Biological Modeling and Analysis

Researcher: Mr Frederik Surya Tjoe
Project Supervisor: Dr Yonghong Peng, Prof Desmond Tobin

Gene expression data such as Microarray provides a powerful resource to analyze the dynamics of large number of genes at the genome scale. This project first investigate the clustering analysis of Melanoma gene expression data, and identify the over and under expressed genes which are important to be studied further. The second part of the project develops the biological network construction and visualization tool which reveals certain level of information to enable the user gain insights of the system properties.

Cancer Microarray Bioinformatics

Researcher: Miss Erfaneh Naghieh
Project Supervisor: Dr Yonghong Peng

DNA microarray technology has demonstrated to be an effective methodology for the diagnosis of diseases and cancers by means of expression data classification. Although much research has been conducted during the recent years to apply machine learning techniques for microarray data classification, there are two important issues that prevent the use of conventional machine learning techniques, namely the limited availability of training samples and the existence of various uncertainties. This project intends to develop a integrative microarray data processing approach, including (1) identification of differential genes (significant genes); (2) modelling of the co-expression genes (construction of networks of modules under different cancers or disease); (3) identification and validation of the diagnostic modules.
