He's got through his MOT, but not without some trouble! Stearing rack, front disks, bit of welding, horn (durrhhh, why didn't I check that before I put it in), headlamp alignment (a price we pay for the bonnet design I guess). Most of these I could do, but I haven't got the time at the moment, so I ended up paying for the garage to do it. Shame on me.
The clutch finally gave out on the way back from a trip to the South. It's been in the cards for some time, but finally it became almost impossible to get into first gear. Made it home in one piece (although my left arm ached!). Getting hold of a clutch was slightly complicated by the fact that I've got the original Herald gearbox mated to a Spit 1500 engine. Thankfully John Kipping knows what he's talking about and got me the correct one.
I spent a weekend replacing the clutch, then on Monday the hydraulics went! Just as I was driving up to the Cow and Calf in Ilkley, which if anyone knows it is pretty steep. I managed to get into the car park there and then free-wheel back down the hill to reach some habitation. I guess the stress of the new clutch spring was too much for the ageing rubber seals!
On checking the price of a new master cylinder I decided to overall the two cylinders. This I did at the side of the road where I'd abandoned it, much to the amusement of the local residents.
Latest news is that, after having put a new clutch in a few weeks ago, the dynamo's died! I was intending fitting an alternator anyway, so this has prompted me to get on with it. I'll put details of how to do it on this site, because I tried to do a search on the WWW for details but with no luck. I fitted an alternator to my MkIII, and besides fitting a wire too near the coil causing it to melt and nearly right off the car in the resulting fire, that went OK (surprising how quick you can pull over and disconnect the battery when you need to)!!!! Fingers crossed!
OK, that worked, Herman's back on the road. Seems to be drinking a bit much lately, but I guess he takes after his owner. Now all I have to do is find some time to get rid of the rapidly spreading rust...
