The 8th School of Informatics Research Workshop for Research Students was held on Thursday 28th June 2007 in the University's new Horton Barn lecture theatre. The Workshop chair and editor of the proceedings was Dr Dimitris Rigas from the Department of Computing in the School of Informatics

The proceedings were opened by the Dean of the School of Informatics, Dr Ian Palmer. In his opening speech Dr. Palmer stressed the importance of research to School of Informatics and on the School's commitment to increasing its number of research students.

Following Dr Palmer, Professor Peter Excell, School of Informatics' Associate Dean for Research, addressed the workshop. Prefessor Excell congratulated current students on their excellent research work and pointed out the the School of Informatics has the highest number of research students in the University. Professor Excell went on to discuss the forthcoming RAE 2008 (Research Assessment Exercise) and how many research students had been involved in the work being submitted

The workshop is an excellent opportunity for research students to exchange ideas and collaborate with research students from other universities. Following the success of previous workshops, the workshop is becoming an important part of the lively research culture in the School of Informatics and the University of Bradford.

Dr Marc Fabri - Keynote Speaker

The Keynote Speaker for the event was Dr Marc Fabri from Leeds Metropolitan University. His presentation was entitled "Expressive avatars for chatting, learning and therapeutic intervention".

Synopsis

Dr Marc Fabri.Expressive avatars are animated virtual characters that can display emotions via facial expressions. Because these avatars are highly distinctive and easily recognisable, they can be used in a range of applications. One example is Instant Messaging where avatars represent the people who communicate. This was my PhD topic and I will outline the results and talk about the research progress.

Another example is avatars as an assistive technology for people with autism. I will talk about how current work in this field may help overcome some of the limitations that characterise the condition that is autism.
