Welcome from the Dean

On behalf of all my colleagues I am delighted to welcome you to the School of Informatics. We believe we are engaged in an exciting and forward-looking programme of teaching, research, and links with industry - at a local, national and international level.

Our motto is "creative innovation"; at all levels of our activity endash; from the design of new courses to their implementation and delivery, through to our research and our links with industry. We have doubled our students and staff numbers over the last four years endash; a period of unprecedented growth by normal standards. We believe this testifies to the excitement and attractiveness of what we have to offer.

We have a number of exciting opportunities for school-leavers, mature, and part-time students in a range of subjects. If you're interested in computing, digital media, virtual reality, cybernetics, robotics, and information technology of any kind, I'm sure we have the right course for you!

The School has a track record of developing innovative new interdisciplinary courses to meet the needs of students. We have recently developed 14 new courses at Foundation and Bachelor's degree level, including a suite of BSc degrees in Information and Communication Technologies, a BA in Digital Media, and a Foundation Degree for people who wish to start their own IT business. We have a number of new Postgraduate courses including MSc in Artificial Intelligence for Games, MA in Computer Animation, MA in Digital Arts and Media, MA in Digital Cinema, MSc in Digital Special Effects, MSc in Entertainment Technologies and MSc in Imaging, Computer Vision and Graphics We also have plans to develop further our courses in media and creative arts.

Each area has pioneering initiatives in their respective academic areas and each is strongly committed to interdisciplinary collaborations within the School and beyond. We believe that we have the components for tomorrow's digital future and look forward to working towards shaping it and implementing it from social, personal and digital perspectives.

The School has recently obtained £416K from the Higher Education Funding Council for the development of a state-of-the-art Digital Arts Studio to support provision for interdisciplinary art and design, and digital photography. This will increase the School's support for interdisciplinary and arts-based areas.

The School supports mobile and wireless networking for staff and students and is fully committed to the University's developing e-strategy to ensure that communication is facilitated to enhance the student learning experience, and that student support services are flexible and agile.
